The costs of work-related and personal injuries to corporations are monumental. Here are some statistics:
Worker's Comp Costs
The bottom line is that approximately 5% of a company's workforce will experience a work related injury resulting in an average of 9 missed days of work per year and each injury will cost the company $38,000 in direct and indirect costs. Thus, for a company with 200 employees, the cost would be $380,000.
Personal Inury Costs
While costs associated with workers' compensation claims are burdensome for companies, there are other injury-related costs as well. According to a study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association in 2003, headaches, back pain, arthritis and other muscle and joint pain cost U.S. employers more than $61 billion per year due to lost productivity secondary to pain. These injuries may not be severe enough (yet) for the worker to file a workers' compensation claim - or they may be unrelated to the workplace. Regardless of the source, it is estimated that the productivity of a worker who is experiencing this kind of pain is reduced by 4.6 hours per week. If, for example, over the course of a year, a 200-person company has 15% of its employees suffering from these distracting symptoms for two months each, that's over $33,000 in lost productivity.
